1. What Is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity describes the presence or absence of internal inclusions and external blemishes in a lab-grown diamond. While clarity influences transparency and light performance, cut quality and proportions typically have a larger effect on visible brilliance.

Clarity grades are assigned under standardized conditions so buyers can compare stones consistently, whether they are lab-grown or mined.

2. The Clarity Scale (FL to I3)

  • FL/IF — Flawless / Internally Flawless (no inclusions visible at 10×; IF permits minute surface blemishes only).
  • VVS1–VVS2 — Very, Very Slightly Included (inclusions are extremely difficult to see at 10×).
  • VS1–VS2 — Very Slightly Included (minor inclusions, difficult to somewhat easy to see at 10×; many are eye clean).
  • SI1–SI2 — Slightly Included (inclusions noticeable at 10×; some may be eye visible depending on type and location).
  • I1–I3 — Included (inclusions obvious at 10× and often to the naked eye; may affect durability or transparency).

At LabCreated.Diamonds, inventory standards are VS1 or better clarity and H or better color for consistently high face-up beauty.

3. How Clarity Is Graded

Independent laboratories evaluate clarity at 10× magnification, considering five key factors: size, number, position, nature, and relief of inclusions and blemishes. For lab-grown diamonds, we recognize grading by IGI and GIA.

For a detailed visual reference, you can view the official GIA Clarity Scale directly on GIA’s website — the global authority on diamond grading. It opens in a new tab so you can explore the official clarity chart while staying on this page.

Your diamond’s clarity grade is printed on the grading report and matched to its laser inscription on the girdle for easy verification.

4. “Eye Clean” vs. Technical Grade

“Eye clean” means inclusions are not visible to an unaided eye at normal viewing distance. Many VS and some well-chosen SI lab diamonds appear eye clean, especially with excellent cut and smart inclusion positions (off the table, near the girdle, or masked by facets).

Prioritize overall appearance: an Ideal/Excellent cut often looks brighter than a higher clarity grade with inferior proportions.
